The devastation caused by natural disasters leaves communities in chaos, often displacing families, destroying homes, and leaving countless individuals in dire need of assistance. During these critical moments, organizations like the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) have historically stepped up to provide relief, offering a beacon of hope amidst the wreckage. As the current wildfires in Los Angeles wreak havoc across the region, the Odd Fellows have once again mobilized their resources, continuing their legacy of charitable service.

A Legacy of Compassion and Aid
The Independent Order of Odd Fellows, founded in 1819, has long been dedicated to principles of friendship, love, and truth. One of the cornerstones of the organization is to provide aid to those in need, especially during times of crisis. Over the years, the Odd Fellows have played an instrumental role in responding to disasters, offering financial assistance, shelter, food, and emotional support.
For example, during the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, the Odd Fellows transformed their meeting halls into makeshift shelters for displaced residents. Members worked tirelessly to distribute food and water, organize medical aid, and provide comfort to those who had lost everything. Similarly, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Odd Fellows lodges across the country rallied to raise funds and deliver supplies to the affected areas. These efforts exemplify the organization’s commitment to serving humanity in its darkest hours.

Responding to the LA Fires: Current Efforts
The wildfires currently raging across Los Angeles have forced thousands of residents to evacuate, with many facing uncertainty about the future. The Odd Fellows, true to their mission, have quickly organized relief efforts to support those impacted by the disaster. Their response includes:
Emergency Shelters: Several lodges in the Los Angeles area have opened their doors to evacuees, providing temporary shelter to families who have been forced to flee their homes. Volunteers ensure that these shelters are equipped with basic necessities, including bedding, toiletries, and food.
Donation Drives: The Odd Fellows have launched donation campaigns to collect clothing, non-perishable food, bottled water, and other essential items. These donations are being distributed to evacuees and first responders.
Financial Assistance: Recognizing that many families will face significant financial burdens as they rebuild their lives, the Odd Fellows have established relief funds to provide monetary support. These funds help cover immediate expenses such as hotel stays, medical bills, and replacement of essential items.
Support for First Responders: The Odd Fellows understand the critical role that firefighters and emergency personnel play during wildfires. To support these heroes, lodges are delivering meals, hydration supplies, and care packages to fire stations and command centers.
Mental Health Resources: In addition to addressing physical needs, the Odd Fellows are offering emotional support to those affected by the fires. They have partnered with mental health professionals to provide counseling services, recognizing the trauma and stress caused by such events.

Anecdotes of Service
Stories from past disasters highlight the profound impact of the Odd Fellows’ relief efforts. One such story comes from the aftermath of the Joplin tornado in 2011. A member of the local lodge, who had lost his home in the disaster, recounted how fellow Odd Fellows arrived with shovels, chainsaws, and supplies to help clear debris and salvage what little remained of his property. “They didn’t just offer words of comfort,” he said. “They rolled up their sleeves and worked alongside me, turning devastation into hope.”
In the current LA fires, similar acts of kindness are emerging. A family of five who sought refuge in an Odd Fellows lodge shared their gratitude for the warm meals, comfortable sleeping arrangements, and the compassionate support they received. “We lost our home, but here we found a community that cares,” said the mother, wiping away tears of appreciation.
Another story involves a group of Odd Fellows who drove hours to deliver supplies to a remote evacuation center. One volunteer recalled, “The look of relief on people’s faces when we arrived with truckloads of food and water was worth every mile we traveled.”

A Call to Action
The Odd Fellows’ response to the LA fires serves as a reminder of the importance of community-driven disaster relief efforts. However, the scale of the disaster requires support from individuals and organizations alike. The Odd Fellows encourage others to get involved by:
Donating: Contributions to relief funds can make a significant difference in helping families rebuild their lives.
Volunteering: Lending a hand at shelters, packing donations, or assisting with distribution efforts can provide much-needed support.
Spreading Awareness: Sharing information about relief efforts can inspire others to contribute and ensure that those in need receive assistance.

The Odd Fellows’ Enduring Mission
At its core, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows is about building a better world through acts of kindness and generosity. Their response to disasters like the LA fires exemplifies this mission, demonstrating that even in the face of overwhelming tragedy, the spirit of humanity prevails.
As the fires continue to burn, the Odd Fellows remain steadfast in their commitment to supporting affected communities. Their actions remind us that in times of crisis, unity and compassion can bring hope and healing to those who need it most.
Conclusion
The current wildfires in Los Angeles are a stark reminder of the devastating impact natural disasters can have on communities. Yet, they also highlight the critical role organizations like the Independent Order of Odd Fellows play in providing relief and support. Through their tireless efforts, the Odd Fellows offer not only immediate aid but also a sense of hope and resilience to those affected. Their legacy of compassion and service continues to inspire, proving that in the darkest times, humanity’s light shines brightest.

Good morning,
As I see the devastating fires in southern California from afar, my heart goes out to all that have been affected. I hope that none of our brothers and sisters have been harmed or have lost their homes.
I am sure that Odd Fellows and Rebekahs in southern California have friends and family that have been victims. For them and others in our communities, we should look for ways to provide assistance. Some may be able to offer shelter in their lodges or homes. Some may be able to offer provisions or other assistance.
Times like this pose challenges and opportunities to rise up and help others. I encourage us all to consider what we individually, and as Odd Fellows and Rebekahs, can do to help our brothers and sisters and our communities. Local relief organizations are and will be tirelessly working to provide assistance. The needs of the victims will be immense for quite a while.
The Grand Lodge has two programs that can offer some assistance: the Disaster Fund (https://www.caioof.org/disaster_fund_application) and the Beneficial Fund (https://www.caioof.org/application_for_member_benefits). If you or other brothers or sisters have been impacted by the fires, check out these programs to see if you qualify for assistance.
Let us consider how we can rise to the occasion and show who and what we are! We can make a difference! Stay safe!
In Friendship, Love and Truth,
Dave Reed"
